India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully intercepted a major drug smuggling attempt, detaining four individuals linked to the trafficking of hashish oil intended for the Maldives. The operation, conducted in Tamil Nadu’s port city of Tuticorin, resulted in the seizure of 12 kilograms of hashish oil, valued at approximately ₹12 crore (MVR 21 million) on the international market.
The DRI launched the operation based on specific intelligence regarding the movement of illicit substances through a sailing vessel. Officials heightened surveillance in Tuticorin’s Old Harbour area, where two suspects on a motorcycle were intercepted. The individuals, identified as Raja alias Jesuraja (34) and Sudhakar (33), both residents of Fatima Nagar in Tuticorin, were found carrying 12 containers filled with a dark, viscous substance. Laboratory tests later confirmed the material as hashish oil, a potent derivative of cannabis.
Further investigations led to two additional arrests. Kingsly (56), a crew member of a vessel allegedly used in the smuggling operation, and Marimuthu (30), a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, were taken into custody. Marimuthu is accused of misusing his position to provide false security clearances, aiding the illegal operation.
The four accused were presented before a magistrate court and have been remanded in judicial custody as investigations continue.
This incident highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking between India and the Maldives. Both nations have intensified their efforts to curb such activities, acknowledging the severe impact of narcotics on societal well-being and regional stability.
The Maldives, known for its idyllic beaches and thriving tourism industry, has faced challenges with drug-related issues in recent years. Collaborative efforts like these are critical in addressing the transnational drug trade that threatens both countries.
The operation is a testament to the vigilance of Indian authorities and underscores the importance of continued cooperation between India and the Maldives in tackling organized crime and ensuring regional security.
