President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to expand the housing project in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alif Atoll, increasing the number of housing units allocated to the island from 100 to 200.
The announcement was made during the President’s visit to Ihavandhoo on Wednesday, as part of his ongoing tour of islands in the northern atoll. The decision follows a nationwide assessment of housing needs and economic potential, leading to the expansion of planned developments in key locations.
“I did not specify the number of units for Ihavandhoo during my campaign. However, this is an island with strong economic potential and a clear demand for housing. I believe a significant number of housing units should be built here,” President Muizzu stated while addressing residents.
With this expansion, the government has now allocated a total of 600 housing units across five islands in Haa Alif Atoll:
- Hoarafushi – 200 units
- Ihavandhoo – 200 units
- Dhidhdhoo – 200 units
- Kela – 50 units
- Utheemu – 50 units
The housing initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to addressing the growing demand for affordable housing across the country. The 2024 state budget has earmarked MVR 1.5 billion for housing projects, with funding models varying between full government financing and a 15% equity model, which requires contractors to contribute a portion of the investment.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Finance issued recruitment notices for contractors to execute housing projects in multiple islands, signaling the government’s intent to expedite the construction process.
The expansion of housing in Ihavandhoo aligns with the administration’s vision of strengthening urban centers and facilitating economic growth in the atolls, ensuring that housing shortages do not hinder the development of key island communities.
