Maldives’ Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, held bilateral talks with Ruth Davis, the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for Climate and Environment, during the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) currently underway in France.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the global summit, underscored the growing partnership between the Maldives and the UK on critical environmental and climate-related issues. Minister Thoriq expressed gratitude for the UK’s longstanding support, particularly in protected area management and capacity-building programs that have significantly contributed to the Maldives’ sustainability efforts.
“Our collaboration with the UK has played a meaningful role in advancing climate resilience and environmental protection across the Maldives,” said Minister Thoriq during the engagement. He noted that the UK’s assistance has helped strengthen local institutions and has supported the country’s broader environmental goals.
The discussion also touched on expanding joint efforts in marine conservation and sustainable ocean governance — key priorities for both island and coastal nations. With the Maldives being on the frontlines of climate change, Minister Thoriq emphasized the importance of continued international cooperation in safeguarding marine ecosystems and building adaptive capacity in vulnerable communities.
The dialogue is expected to lay the groundwork for future collaboration between the two countries, particularly in initiatives related to climate adaptation, marine biodiversity, and environmental stewardship.
The UN Ocean Conference, now in its third edition, brings together leaders, scientists, and civil society groups from around the world to drive global action on the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources. The conference serves as a critical forum for advancing ocean governance, fostering partnerships, and accelerating solutions for marine conservation in the face of climate change.
