Government Extends Deadline for Media Outlets to Apply for State Financial Assistance

The government has extended the deadline for registered private media organisations to apply for financial assistance from the state budget, giving outlets until 7 October to submit their applications.

The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and the Arts confirmed the extension, noting that the support scheme is open to private newspapers, magazines, and broadcasters that meet the eligibility requirements. Applications must be filed through the dedicated online portal at mediaapp.one.gov.mv.

The funding initiative follows the publication of the Regulation on Financial Assistance to the Media on 22 August, which sets out the criteria and process for applying. While the rules normally allow for grants to be issued in three installments, the government has opted to disburse funds in a single payment this year under a directive from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

A total of USD 1.8 million — equivalent to 0.1 percent of this year’s projected state revenue — has been earmarked for the programme. It is the first time that the state budget has specifically allocated financial assistance to the private media sector.

Eligibility requirements include formal registration, with broadcast media also needing a valid licence. Outlets must have a minimum of three years of continuous operation, ensure public access to their content, publish a code of ethics, and maintain compliance with tax and pension obligations. Staff salaries must be paid through a bank, and applicants with verified outstanding debts must settle them before being considered.

Media groups running more than one outlet may apply separately for one print/online and one broadcast platform. Successful applicants will be assessed through a points-based system, with a minimum threshold of 60 points required.

Officials said the programme is designed to strengthen the financial sustainability of private media, promote credible and ethical journalism, and foster the growth of the industry as a source of responsible employment and reliable information.
