Hulhumalé was the setting for a major anti-drug awareness drive this week, as the National Drug Agency (NDA) rolled out its new initiative Emmen Ekee in collaboration with international and local partners.
The programme, held on the Hulhumalé Central Park grounds, brought together government ministries, state institutions, private companies, and community organisations under one platform with a shared message: building a society resilient against drug abuse.
The awareness fair was jointly organised by NDA, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the Embassy of Japan. The event was inaugurated by HDC Managing Director Brigadier General (Rtd) Ali Zuhair, alongside Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko.
In his address, Zuhair underlined the importance of collective responsibility, noting that many drug-related challenges stem from a lack of awareness and insufficient cooperation. “By working together, we can provide the knowledge and tools our communities need to protect themselves,” he said.
Ambassador Ishigami highlighted the role of young people, stressing that prevention efforts must focus on the next generation. She pointed to education, awareness and positive engagement as the strongest defences against drug abuse.
State Minister for Homeland Security and Technology, and NDA Chairperson, Lubna Mohamed Zahir, described drug abuse as one of the most serious national challenges facing the Maldives. Speaking to state media, she reiterated NDA’s commitment to protecting future generations. “Our purpose is to share accurate information as closely as possible with the public,” she said.
The day-long event featured interactive stalls, including child-friendly activities aimed at teaching younger audiences about the dangers of substance use. The Maldives Police Service also took part, displaying operational vehicles and uniforms to familiarise the public with their work.
Through Emmen Ekee, organisers hope to spark dialogue, strengthen partnerships and build sustained momentum towards reducing drug abuse across the Maldives.
