EC Announces Run-Off Voting in Five Constituencies

The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that a second round of voting will be held this Saturday in five constituencies where candidates finished with equal vote counts in last week’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.

In a statement issued today, the Commission said the run-off became necessary as the number of candidates receiving identical vote totals exceeded the number of available seats in those constituencies.

Constituencies Heading to Second Round

The re-vote will take place in the following areas:

  • Donfanu (Women’s reserved council seat): Between PNC candidate Aishath Muna and MDP candidate Aminath Rafah
  • Fuvahmulah, Dadimagu constituency (Women’s reserved seat): Between PNC candidate Aishath Abdul Gaadir and independent candidate Sheeza Ibrahim
  • Kelaa (WDC President): Between MDP candidate Mahudiyya Adam and PNC candidate Hawwa Fazna
  • Neykurendhoo (WDC Member): Between PNC candidate Fatimath Riuza and independent candidate Fatimath Nishada
  • Maavah (WDC Member): Between PNC candidate Fatimath Shafiya and MDP candidate Maryam Maaisha

Voting Details and Eligibility

According to the EC, polling will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, with official results expected to be announced the following day.

The voter list for the second round will be based on the final registry used in last week’s election in each constituency. It will also include individuals who have since turned 18 and are newly eligible to vote.

Part of Nationwide Election Process

The Commission has advised voters seeking further information to contact its hotline at 1414.

The run-off forms part of the broader Local Council Elections, which saw voters across the country elect 678 councillors and an equal number of WDC members — bringing the total number of representatives to 1,356.

Officials say the additional voting round ensures that tied results are resolved in accordance with electoral regulations, allowing for a clear and legitimate outcome in all constituencies.
