Tourist arrivals in the Maldives saw a significant boost in July, increasing by 15% compared to the same month last year, according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism.
In July 2024, a total of 167,528 tourists visited the Maldives, up from 145,620 in July 2023. This rise contributes to a year-to-date total of 1.18 million tourists, marking a 10% increase from the 1.07 million arrivals during the same period last year.
China continues to lead in terms of tourist numbers, with over 159,000 Chinese visitors arriving in the Maldives so far this year. Russia follows as the second-largest source of tourists, with over 126,000 Russian visitors recorded to date.
On average, the Maldives now welcomes 5,404 tourists daily, with an average stay duration of seven days.
The government has set an ambitious target to attract 2 million tourists in 2024. Currently, the Maldives offers a variety of accommodations, including 176 resorts, 854 guesthouses, 148 safari vessels, and 15 city hotels.
In a bid to further support this growth, the new terminal at Velana International Airport is set to open in November 2024. The completion of all related works is expected by the first quarter of 2025, enhancing the airport’s capacity and efficiency to accommodate the rising number of tourists.
This increase in tourist arrivals underscores the Maldives’ continued appeal as a top travel destination and reflects the effectiveness of its tourism strategies.
