Maldives to Join International Atomic Energy Agency

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has made the decision to pursue Maldives’ membership in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with the proposal set to be submitted to the People’s Majilis for approval under Article 93(1).

The decision follows a detailed discussion in the Cabinet on a paper presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs during Sunday’s meeting. At a press conference yesterday, Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer emphasized that joining the IAEA would bring significant benefits to the Maldives, particularly in the development of nuclear medicine.

Minister Zameer highlighted that President Muizzu has committed to establishing a cancer treatment hospital in the Maldives, where nuclear medicine could be a crucial component. Nuclear medicine is increasingly used in the treatment of various diseases, and collaboration with the IAEA is seen as a strategic step toward enhancing the country’s healthcare capabilities.

In addition to advancements in nuclear medicine, the Maldives could also explore benefits in renewable energy through its association with the IAEA. The government has stated that the Ministry of Defence will oversee all activities related to the agency, and that joining the IAEA is a process that requires parliamentary approval, making it a long-term commitment.

Established in 1957, the IAEA is dedicated to promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and preventing its use for military purposes, including nuclear weapons. Currently, the organization has 178 member states, with Maldives and Bhutan being the only countries in the region that have not yet joined.
