Maldives Introduces Green Licence Plates for Electric Vehicles

The Maldivian government has announced the introduction of green licence plates for environmentally friendly vehicles, a new initiative aimed at promoting sustainable transport across the country.

The plan was confirmed by Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, who described the initiative as the first programme of its kind in the Maldives.

Under the new system, electric and eco-friendly vehicles will be fitted with green licence plates to make them easily identifiable on the roads. Private electric cars will carry plates featuring white lettering, while electric taxis will use yellow lettering.

Minister Ameen shared a preview of the new “EV plates” through his social media accounts, encouraging public support for the shift toward cleaner transport options.

The introduction of green plates forms part of a broader government push to transition toward environmentally sustainable transportation. Officials say the initiative aligns with environmental commitments made by President Mohamed Muizzu, including pledges announced ahead of the global climate summit COP29.

Authorities say the policy reflects the administration’s wider vision of establishing a greener and more energy-efficient transport network across the Maldives.

Alongside the licence plate initiative, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is preparing to introduce a fully electric taxi service. Plans are underway to import approximately 150 electric vehicles to support the rollout.

At present, licence plates in the Maldives follow a colour-coded system: black plates for private vehicles, yellow for taxis, white for military vehicles, and blue for diplomatic cars.

Officials believe the introduction of EV plates will not only help identify environmentally friendly vehicles but also encourage greater adoption of electric mobility as the country works to reduce emissions and strengthen its climate commitments.
