President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly. The meeting, which took place at the UN Headquarters, focused on key challenges facing the Maldives and the country’s aspirations within the global body.
During the discussions, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to playing a more active role within the UN, particularly on issues affecting Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He underscored the nation’s ongoing efforts to tackle fiscal challenges, briefing the Secretary-General on the government’s fiscal reform agenda aimed at reducing debt and creating a sustainable financial framework. The President highlighted the importance of support from both bilateral and multilateral partners in achieving these goals.
Secretary-General Guterres praised the Maldives for its proactive role in addressing global issues, especially in the realm of climate change adaptation. He assured the President of his continued commitment to supporting the Maldives in its adaptation efforts, along with other pressing national challenges.
In closing the meeting, President Muizzu expressed his gratitude for the UN’s continued support under Guterres’ leadership, thanking the Secretary-General for providing a platform where all member nations can address their global concerns.
