On the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with Palestinian President Dr. Mahmoud Abbas, where both leaders discussed the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for global intervention. The meeting underscored the Maldives’ unwavering support for the Palestinian people, as well as the broader call for peace in the region.
During the discussion, President Abbas made an emotional plea to the international community, urging immediate action for a ceasefire, stating, “We are asking for a ceasefire because we are also human.” He called for global cooperation to address the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians and urged nations to stand in solidarity.
In response, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong commitment to supporting Palestine in all capacities. He expressed hope for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and vowed that the Maldives would continue to advocate for Palestine’s recognition as an independent nation on the global stage.
President Abbas extended his gratitude for the Maldives’ long-standing solidarity, remarking, “We are always aware of the Maldives’ support for the Palestinian people, and we deeply appreciate your unwavering solidarity.”
The meeting concluded with both leaders pledging to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two countries, while continuing to work together on shared goals and regional issues.
