President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressing the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, addressing the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), called for immediate and coordinated global action to combat climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. In his speech, the Maldivian leader described climate change as the greatest threat to humanity and emphasized the need for collective efforts to confront it.

Dr. Muizzu outlined the devastating impact of climate change on vulnerable nations like the Maldives, noting that it erodes decades of progress, redirects crucial resources from development to emergency relief, and hinders countries’ ability to adapt. He urged a science-based and immediate response to the crisis, underpinned by sufficient financial resources and global determination.

The President specifically called on wealthier, high-emission countries to fulfill their financial commitments, particularly in supporting adaptation efforts in vulnerable nations. He stressed the growing funding gaps and the urgent need for a new climate finance framework ahead of the upcoming COP29 summit, ensuring that it aligns with the scale of action required to tackle the climate emergency.

Reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to sustainability, Dr. Muizzu pledged that by 2028, 33% of the country’s electricity demand will be met through renewable energy. This commitment reflects the Maldives’ dedication to a climate-resilient future, despite being one of the nations most affected by the climate crisis.

Additionally, the President highlighted the critical role of the ocean for the Maldivian people and their economy. He called for stronger efforts to combat plastic pollution, conserve marine biodiversity, and protect endangered species. Dr. Muizzu emphasized that the world must act decisively on climate change and environmental degradation to safeguard the planet for future generations.

In conclusion, President Muizzu’s speech urged global leaders to prioritize climate action and sustainability, emphasizing the need for cooperation and immediate measures to address these pressing challenges.
