Police Warn of Rising Fraud Targeting the Elderly in Maldives

The Maldives Police Service has raised concerns over an alarming increase in fraud cases specifically targeting the elderly population across the country. Officials are urging the public, particularly senior citizens and their families, to stay vigilant as fraudsters continue to exploit vulnerable individuals.

In a statement released by the police, it was highlighted that perpetrators often pose as acquaintances to gain the trust of the elderly. These criminals use manipulation and deception to lure victims into various fraudulent schemes, leading to financial losses.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan recently shared statistics that paint a concerning picture of fraud in the Maldives. According to Shifan, over MVR 13 million has been lost to scams and extortion this year alone, with only MVR 2.2 million successfully recovered. These scams have affected individuals, businesses, and associations alike, with large sums of money stolen in coordinated fraudulent schemes.

The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activity or incidents immediately. Anyone encountering such situations can contact the Maldives Police Service hotline at 3322111 or dial the emergency number for assistance.

Authorities also warn that phishing attempts, particularly through suspicious text message links, are on the rise. The police advise against clicking on unknown links or sharing personal information with strangers. They emphasize the importance of exercising caution when approached by unfamiliar individuals, especially when financial transactions are involved.

As part of their ongoing efforts to combat fraud, a dedicated police unit is focused on tackling such cases.
