The Maldives has seen a significant influx of tourists from India this year, with over 100,000 visitors from the country as of the latest figures released by the Ministry of Tourism. According to the Ministry’s daily updates, a total of 103,438 Indian tourists have traveled to the Maldives so far in 2024, making India the sixth-largest source market for Maldives tourism. This is a notable change from last year, when India held the top spot with over 200,000 visitors.
The Ministry has implemented several initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s tourism appeal to Indian travelers. In July, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) hosted “Welcome India,” a promotional campaign in three major Indian cities to highlight the Maldives’ unique tourism experiences.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to India further boosted tourism ties, as he participated in a high-profile event in Mumbai, attended by several Bollywood personalities and industry figures. This engagement has led to increased interest among Indian celebrities, many of whom have recently chosen the Maldives for their holidays. Their shared travel moments on social media play a key role in boosting the country’s profile as a sought-after destination for Indian tourists.
Overall, Maldives tourism has seen substantial growth this year, with total arrivals reaching 1,693,952—a 9.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The government remains optimistic about achieving its annual target of two million visitors by the end of December, driven by continued efforts to attract visitors from key markets like India.
