President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took part in the opening session of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The theme of this year’s conference, “In Solidarity for a Green World,” emphasizes global cooperation in tackling climate change—a cause the Maldives views as vital for its survival and sustainable future.
President Muizzu, a consistent advocate for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), has used COP29 as a platform to highlight the Maldives’ unique climate challenges. The conference presents an opportunity for the Maldives to showcase its ongoing efforts in climate resilience and sustainable development.
This marks President Muizzu’s second COP participation since taking office in November 2023. At last year’s COP28, he presented a bold vision for a climate-resilient Maldives, including initiatives like planting five million trees and a commitment to produce 33% of the nation’s electricity from renewable energy within five years.
The agenda for COP29 is focused on critical global climate goals, such as establishing a new collective financial target, enhancing international cooperation, and addressing barriers to developing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). President Muizzu joined other world leaders for a symbolic group photo before the session, underscoring their shared commitment to combating climate change.
Later today, President Muizzu is scheduled to deliver the Maldives’ national address, where he is expected to outline the nation’s climate ambitions and resilience strategies in greater detail. His speech will likely reinforce the Maldives’ call for greater support and concrete actions to aid vulnerable nations in their fight against climate impacts.
