Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced plans to introduce seaplane services at Hanimaadhoo International Airport, marking a significant step in expanding its service offerings and boosting revenue potential. This development was disclosed during a briefing to the Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee by MACL Deputy Managing Director Mujthaba Latheef.
According to Mujthaba, the move is part of broader efforts to integrate the Regional Airports Company into MACL. A crucial share exchange agreement between the Privatisation and Corporatisation Board (PCB), Regional Airports, and MACL is set to be finalized this week.
“The introduction of seaplane services will enhance the airport’s operational viability and profitability,” Mujthaba said. He added that a dedicated seaplane terminal is also in the works, further strengthening the airport’s role as a regional aviation hub.
Transforming Hanimaadhoo into a Northern Gateway
Hanimaadhoo International Airport is currently undergoing a USD 136.6 million expansion project aimed at fostering economic growth in the northern Maldives. The development includes a new 2,465-meter runway, capable of accommodating larger aircraft carrying up to 300 passengers. This milestone runway was inaugurated in October 2024, with partial operations commencing earlier in the year.
Once completed, the airport is expected to handle up to 1.3 million passengers annually, providing a major boost to northern tourism. The project, slated for completion by February 2025, is expected to transform Hanimaadhoo into a critical hub for both international and domestic travel, significantly improving connectivity in the region.
This initiative underscores the Maldivian government’s commitment to regional development, with Hanimaadhoo poised to play a pivotal role in the economic upliftment of the Greater Thiladhunmathi area.
