President Muizzu Urges Citizens to Honor Fishermen’s Commitment on National Fishermen’s Day

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the importance of recognizing and respecting the dedication and hard work of Maldivian fishermen, calling it a national responsibility. In a message shared on social media to mark National Fishermen’s Day, celebrated annually on December 10, the President extended his warm wishes to fishermen and their families, acknowledging their relentless efforts in challenging conditions.

“The commitment and hard work of our fishermen, who venture into the high seas in various weather conditions and at all hours, deserve the utmost respect from every citizen,” President Muizzu stated.

During his address to the people of Kaafu Atoll Gaafaru yesterday, President Muizzu highlighted key initiatives aimed at supporting the fishing community. He announced that, as per his electoral pledge, payments for weighed fish sold by fishing vessels with accounts at the Bank of Maldives (BML) would be deposited within 48 hours. Plans are also underway to extend similar arrangements for fishermen banking with Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).

The President also noted that a crucial agreement had been signed between the Ministry of Finance, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), and BML to streamline and expedite payments to fishermen.

In addition to resolving payment delays, the administration has introduced measures to address other longstanding concerns of the fishing community. Among these is a programme to supply fuel to fishermen in the outer islands at the same rates available in Malé. To achieve this, the government has begun developing fuel storage facilities in one island per atoll, with four such facilities already operational.

President Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to granting fishermen greater control over the fishery sector, a step aimed at empowering them and fostering sustainable growth. Local councils are also being given the option to manage ice plants across the country, aligning with the administration’s decentralization goals.

As the nation celebrated Fishermen’s Day, these initiatives underscore the government’s dedication to addressing challenges faced by the fishing community and enhancing the industry’s overall development.
