Government to Expand No-Smoking Zones Under New Health Regulations

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to significantly increase the number of designated no-smoking zones across the Maldives as part of its ongoing efforts to protect public health and reduce tobacco use.

During a panel discussion organized by PSM News in collaboration with the Health Ministry, Deputy Minister of Health Ismail Zahir revealed that the new regulations, once gazetted, would bring about substantial changes to smoking restrictions in public spaces.

Stricter No-Smoking Regulations

Deputy Minister Zahir stated that the forthcoming regulations would clearly delineate public areas where smoking is prohibited, as well as designate specific venues where smoking will be allowed. The changes aim to expand the scope of existing no-smoking zones, making enforcement more effective for law enforcement agencies.

“The regulations will empower authorities to better implement tobacco control measures, ensuring greater compliance and creating a safer environment for the public,” said Zahir.

Tobacco Control Act Amendments

The initiative follows recent amendments to the Tobacco Control Act, which banned the import, sale, distribution, and use of electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and related products in the Maldives. Speaking on the changes, Zahir emphasized the ministry’s collaboration with local councils to raise awareness about the new rules and the health risks associated with vaping and tobacco use.

Law Enforcement’s Role

Representatives from the Maldives Police Service and Maldives Customs Service also participated in the discussion. Police Sub-Inspector Nizam Mohamed encouraged the public to report instances of vaping in public venues and on roads.

“We urge everyone to report violations, and we assure that law enforcement will respond promptly and take necessary actions,” Nizam stated. He also confirmed that individuals found selling or using vaping devices would face legal consequences, with fines issued and notifications sent directly to offenders via mobile phones.

Support for Quitting Tobacco

In a move to support individuals seeking to quit tobacco, the Health Ministry has launched a 24-hour hotline, 1676, to provide guidance and assistance. The hotline is part of a broader initiative to help citizens overcome tobacco addiction and promote healthier lifestyles.

The government’s efforts to expand no-smoking zones and curb the use of tobacco and vaping products reflect its commitment to safeguarding public health.
