The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has dismissed allegations made by suspended State Minister for Tourism Mohamed Nihad regarding the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) planning disruptive activities targeting resorts in Malé Atoll. The party has also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of tourists visiting the Maldives.
Nihad, speaking at a PNC rally earlier this week, claimed that the MDP was orchestrating actions, including a potential terrorist attack, to undermine the tourism sector and disrupt the government’s preparations to celebrate two million tourist arrivals. Following his remarks, Nihad was suspended from his role at the Ministry of Tourism.
In a statement issued in response, the PNC firmly rejected Nihad’s allegations, asserting that no responsible political party or civil society organization in the Maldives would engage in actions that threaten the tourism industry or the nation’s economy. The party emphasized that all entities must operate within the law, and any illegal actions will be met with appropriate measures by relevant authorities.
The PNC reassured stakeholders and tourists that the Maldives remains a safe and peaceful destination. The statement underscored the government’s dedication to protecting investments in the tourism sector and maintaining the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class travel destination.
“Ensuring the safety of tourists and safeguarding the economic backbone of the country is a top priority. We will not allow baseless allegations to overshadow the nation’s commitment to peace and prosperity,” the PNC stated.
The party also urged political parties, government institutions, civil society organizations, and individuals to act responsibly and avoid actions that could jeopardize the country’s stability and economic growth.
As the Maldives nears a milestone in tourist arrivals, the government continues to emphasize collaboration and lawfulness to sustain the country’s thriving tourism sector, which remains a cornerstone of the nation’s economy.
