Zakat Fund Records Historic Income of MVR 98 Million This Year

The Maldivian Zakat Fund has achieved a record-breaking milestone, receiving MVR 98 million in contributions this year, according to Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed. This marks the highest annual income ever recorded for the fund.

Speaking at a recent event, Dr. Shaheem highlighted the government’s aim to increase the fund to at least MVR 100 million. He noted that this growth reflects the success of initiatives introduced under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, particularly the establishment of a dedicated Zakat Agency.

“This remarkable outcome is a direct result of the special Zakat Agency established by President Dr. Muizzu’s government,” Dr. Shaheem stated. Previously, Zakat matters were managed by a department within the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. However, the creation of a separate agency on December 18, 2023, has enhanced efficiency and public awareness, contributing to the fund’s growth.

The Zakat Fund, governed by Islamic principles, provides extensive assistance to those in need. It supports medical treatments, higher education, and other essential services. Notably, many Thalassemia patients have received aid for bone marrow transplants abroad through the fund.

Additionally, the fund has extended its reach internationally, sending USD 100,000 in humanitarian aid to support the people of Gaza.

Dr. Shaheem attributed the increased contributions to greater public awareness, citing a significant rise from the MVR 14 million collected in previous years. He emphasized the government’s commitment to using the Zakat Fund to assist beneficiaries in line with Shari’ah provisions.

The announcement of this record income follows the successful conclusion of this year’s International Zakat Conference, where the importance of zakat as a tool for social and economic development was widely discussed. With these developments, the Zakat Fund continues to serve as a vital resource for addressing both domestic and international needs.
