Mental Health Services to Reach Every Atoll Hospital in the Maldives

The Maldives government has announced plans to establish psychiatry and speech therapy services in every atoll hospital, marking a significant step toward improving mental healthcare across the country. This initiative is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledge to expand access to essential health services nationwide.

Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim revealed the plan during an interview with PSM News, highlighting the increasing prevalence of mental health issues and the challenges faced by island communities in accessing specialized care. Currently, these services are limited to hospitals in Malé and select regional facilities, compelling many to travel long distances for treatment.

“There is a substantial demand for these services among the public,” Minister Nazim noted, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to making mental healthcare accessible in all parts of the Maldives. To fulfill this goal, the government has started recruiting psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and therapists.

Under the new policy, these services will be introduced in level-2 hospitals, including Haa Alif Atoll Hospital, Shaviyani Atoll Hospital, Noonu Atoll Hospital, Baa Atoll Hospital, Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital, Faafu Atoll Hospital, Dhaalu Atoll Hospital, Thaa Atoll Hospital, Gaafu Alif Atoll Hospital, and Fuvahmulah Hospital. The rollout is expected to begin early next year.

The government also aims to reduce waiting times for mental health services and provide comprehensive support to those in need. In addition to psychiatry and speech therapy, efforts will focus on easing access to other professionals, including social workers and therapists.

This initiative is complemented by the administration’s launch of a 24/7 mental health helpline, 1677, under the ‘Hafuthaa 14’ roadmap. According to the Health Ministry, the helpline has already seen significant use, reflecting the pressing need for mental health resources in the country.

Minister Ibrahim underscored the urgency of these measures, citing a concerning rise in mental health issues, suicides, and disabilities within the population. The establishment of these services in atoll hospitals is expected to provide much-needed relief to island communities while reducing the burden on facilities in the capital.

The administration’s investment in expanding psychiatry and speech therapy services represents a transformative step toward ensuring equitable healthcare for all citizens of the Maldives.
