President Muizzu Pledges to Handover Gedhoruveriyaa Flats Before Ramadan

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to hand over the flats allocated under the previous administration’s “Gedhoruveriyaa” housing scheme before the upcoming month of Ramadan.

The Gedhoruveriyaa scheme, initiated by the former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government, aimed to build 4,000 flats in Hulhumalé. However, the project remained incomplete by the end of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s term. A final list of flat recipients was released before the administration concluded, but a subsequent investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) revealed that only 20 percent of the listed recipients met the eligibility criteria.

The ACC’s findings prompted the current administration to conduct a comprehensive review of the recipient list to ensure fairness and transparency.

Speaking to reporters at the conclusion of his three-day tour of Huvadhu Atoll, President Muizzu confirmed that the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure is working to expedite the review process and finalize the handover of flats.

“With the recent structural changes, the Housing Ministry’s responsibilities have been placed under the mandate of Minister Abdulla Muththalib. The work done over the past year is being thoroughly reviewed, and we are aiming to complete this process as soon as possible,” the President stated.

Acknowledging the nation’s persistent housing shortage, President Muizzu emphasized that the government is prioritizing major housing initiatives. He revealed plans to seek contractors for key housing projects this month, highlighting a regional approach where a single contractor will be responsible for multiple projects within a specific region to improve cost efficiency.

The President further noted that USD 97.3 million has been allocated for housing projects in this year’s state budget, alongside an additional USD 64.9 million earmarked for low-interest housing loans to support affordable homeownership.

The announcement has been welcomed by many awaiting their housing allocations, as the government moves to address longstanding housing challenges and improve access to affordable homes across the country.
