The Maldives Parliament is set to hold the first of two extraordinary sittings on Thursday morning, ahead of the official start of the new parliamentary session. The sitting will begin at 9 a.m., according to the Parliament Secretariat.
The agenda for Thursday’s sitting includes forwarding nominees for key roles, such as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and two members of the Anti-Corruption Commission, to the relevant committees for review. Additionally, a vote will be conducted on parliamentary approval for recent changes to the Cabinet of Ministers.
Parliamentarians will also vote on committee recommendations regarding appointments to the Elections Commission and the Broadcasting Commission.
These extraordinary sittings have been convened to ensure that appointments to independent commissions are completed within the 60-day legal timeframe. The second extraordinary sitting is scheduled for January 20.
Following the recess, Parliament will officially open its new session on February 6, during which President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is expected to deliver this year’s Presidential Address, outlining the administration’s policy priorities and legislative agenda.
