A man attempting to steal components from a STELCO transformer in Hulhumalé assaulted an employee who tried to intervene. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening and resulted in the suspect’s arrest at approximately 9:00 PM.
According to STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahumy, the suspect attacked the employee with a wrench. The employee, who sustained minor injuries, received medical treatment and has since been discharged from the hospital.
The transformer, located near the MPL towers, suffered damage during the incident, leading to a disruption in the power supply. Fahumy confirmed that efforts to restore electricity service are currently underway.
In a tweet addressing the incident, Fahumy expressed his strong condemnation of the attack:
“I strongly condemn the violent attack on our staff member tonight, where he narrowly escaped permanent disability or even death after being struck on the head with a large wrench. I assure all @STELCOMALDIVES employees that the bravery displayed by this staff member will be recognized, and we will address any threats faced by our team with the utmost seriousness and resolve.”
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about vandalism and theft targeting STELCO infrastructure. Similar reports have surfaced in recent months, including damage to CCTV cameras opposite a transformer last Saturday and the cutting of connected fiber optic cables. Additionally, thefts of electrical cables from private residences have been a recurring issue.
Fahumy emphasized the need for stricter measures to address these security challenges, stating that such actions are unacceptable and compromise the safety of both STELCO employees and the broader community.
