President Highlights Importance of Law Enforcement to Fight Corruption

The Prosecutor General’s Office has revoked immunity agreements for several individuals linked to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal, prompting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to emphasize the importance of strict law enforcement to combat pervasive corruption.

In a statement on social media, President Muizzu praised the decision by the Prosecutor General’s Office to rescind the agreements, which he described as having previously limited the state’s ability to take legal action against those implicated in the scandal. Among the affected individuals are former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, Ahmed Ishfah Ali, Mohamed Allam Latheef, and Mohamed Hussain. The office also noted that it had previously terminated its agreement with Abdulla Ziyath in August 2022.

The now-canceled immunity agreements had been granted to encourage cooperation in recovering funds embezzled in what is widely regarded as the largest corruption case in the country’s recent history. President Muizzu highlighted the need for equal treatment under the law for all suspects, asserting that strict application of anti-corruption measures is crucial to eradicating endemic corruption in the Maldives.

Following the revocation of the immunity agreements, the Prosecutor General’s Office has directed the Maldives Police Service and the Anti-Corruption Commission to reopen their investigations into those involved in the MMPRC case. The authorities are expected to complete their inquiries and submit the findings for prosecution.
