Maldivian Airlines’ Chengdu Flights Take Off with 70% Bookings

Maldivian Airlines celebrated a milestone as its new widebody Airbus A330 took off on its first flight to Chengdu, China, marking a significant expansion in the airline’s international operations. The flight departed last night, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Maldivian’s service to China.

The route has seen strong demand, with 70% of seats already booked, according to Island Aviation Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas. “We are confident these flights will operate at full capacity,” Iyas said, highlighting the growing interest among travelers flying from Chengdu to the Maldives.

Return tickets for the Chengdu route are priced at USD 688 (MVR 10,610), while additional routes to Beijing and Shanghai are set to commence on January 24 and January 27, respectively. Tickets for Beijing are priced at USD 788 (MVR 12,151), and Shanghai at USD 777 (MVR 11,981).

The Airbus A330, a key addition to Maldivian’s fleet, features 260 seats across Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes. It also boasts a cargo capacity of 10 tonnes and the ability to undertake long-haul flights without transit stops. Passengers flying on the A330 can enjoy a generous baggage allowance of 40 kg.

With the introduction of the Airbus A330, Maldivian Airlines now operates a fleet of 25 aircraft. The airline has ambitious plans to expand further, including the addition of another Airbus A330 later this year and the launch of direct flights to European destinations.

The move comes as China resumes international travel and the Maldives remains a popular destination for Chinese tourists. Maldivian Airlines’ new routes are expected to cater to the increasing demand and strengthen connectivity between the two countries.

The airline’s expansion marks a significant step in its growth strategy, aligning with efforts to position the Maldives as a premier destination for travelers from Asia and beyond.
