In a statement made on the occasion of the International Day of Clean Energy, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ dedication to transitioning to renewable energy sources and combating climate change. Addressing the importance of this global initiative, the President emphasized the need for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and protecting the planet, particularly for vulnerable nations like the Maldives.

“As a low-lying island nation, acutely vulnerable to climate change, investing in renewable energy is a vital commitment for the future of the Maldives,” President Muizzu said, stressing the urgency of clean energy for the nation’s long-term sustainability.

The Maldives, in recent years, has made significant strides in advancing renewable energy, with a strong focus on solar power. As part of its ambitious sustainability goals, the country aims to generate 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028. To ensure a reliable and sustainable energy future, the Maldives has put in place strategic policies such as the Energy Act, supported by a clear roadmap for the energy sector. These measures are designed to meet the growing demand for energy while maintaining affordability, security, and sustainability.

The President also acknowledged the crucial role of the private sector in this transition, praising their ongoing investments in renewable energy and encouraging further contributions to these efforts. “These investments not only support global climate goals but also strengthen our energy security and economic resilience,” he remarked.

Additionally, President Muizzu expressed his gratitude to the Maldives’ international financing partners, highlighting their support in turning the nation’s clean energy goals into a reality. He emphasized the need for continued and increased support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in their quest for sustainable energy solutions.

Concluding his message, the President reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the islands, fostering a healthier environment, and setting an example for other nations in the pursuit of clean energy. “The Maldives is determined to establish itself as a global leader in clean energy, for the greater benefit of the nation and the planet,” he said.

With these concerted efforts, the Maldives is charting a path toward a cleaner, greener future, positioning itself as a model for others to follow in tackling the climate crisis.
