Allowing MDP Protest Is a Testament to Gov’s Priority on Democratic Rights: Spokesperson

In a notable demonstration of the government’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was allowed to hold a large-scale protest in Malé last night without any police interference. The event, which has been described as the largest opposition rally since the current administration took office, saw hundreds of protesters take to the streets demanding the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and several cabinet ministers.

President’s Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed stated that the peaceful and unhindered march is a clear indication of the government’s dedication to guaranteeing both Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Assembly, rights enshrined in the national Constitution. “The fact that the protest was allowed to proceed without obstruction shows that our government values the right to free speech and assembly,” Waleed said in a statement.

During the rally, demonstrators marched through key areas of Malé, voicing their discontent with government policies and calling for leadership changes. Security forces were deployed to ensure the safety of participants and maintain orderly conduct, but did not interfere with the protesters’ activities.

After the demonstration concluded, Heena Waleed took to social media on platform X to confirm that the police had merely provided security while respecting the protesters’ right to assemble. “This action reinforces President Muizzu’s policy of protecting freedom of expression,” she added.

The event marks a significant moment in the political landscape of the Maldives, reflecting a shift towards greater tolerance for dissent and the robust exercise of democratic rights. Observers note that this approach by the government contrasts sharply with previous administrations, where opposition protests were frequently met with heavy-handed tactics and restrictions.

As the nation continues to navigate its political challenges, the peaceful protest in Malé is being hailed as a positive step towards a more open and inclusive dialogue between the government and its citizens.
