HPA Urges Lifestyle Changes as Cancer Accounts for 17% of Deaths in Maldives

On World Cancer Day, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a renewed call for the Maldivian public to adopt healthier lifestyles and undergo regular cancer screenings, citing that cancer is responsible for 17% of all deaths in the country each year.

In a detailed statement released Tuesday, the HPA emphasized that cancer remains the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths annually—roughly one in every six deaths worldwide, according to World Health Organization (WHO) data from 2020. In the Maldives, the impact is equally significant, with cancer constituting 17% of total fatalities.

The HPA’s report highlighted that the most common forms of cancer in the Maldives include breast, lung, blood, thyroid, and prostate cancers. Officials stressed that many of these cases are linked to unhealthy lifestyle choices, noting that research suggests up to 40% of cancer cases can be attributed to avoidable factors such as smoking and poor diet.

“Adopting healthier lifestyle practices and engaging in regular screenings are critical steps in reducing the risk of cancer,” a spokesperson for the HPA said. “Early detection not only increases the chances of successful treatment but also improves the overall prognosis for cancer patients.”

The agency’s campaign on World Cancer Day aims to raise public awareness about cancer risk factors and the importance of prevention. HPA officials are urging citizens to refrain from high-risk behaviors and to take advantage of screening services available through local healthcare providers.

As the nation grapples with the growing burden of cancer, the HPA’s message underscores the urgent need for preventive measures and informed lifestyle choices. The agency’s efforts to educate the public and promote early detection are seen as key components in the ongoing fight against cancer in the Maldives.
