Vaping Violations: 12 Individuals Penalized in Maldives

In a decisive move to enforce the country’s new vaping regulations, police have fined multiple individuals under the recently amended Tobacco Control Act. Authorities reported that 12 people were fined for vaping offenses last month, as part of a wider crackdown that saw 17 individuals penalized for 20 violations between December 15 and January.

The updated regulations, enacted following President Dr. Muizzu’s directive on October 14 last year, prohibit the import, use, sale, and free distribution of electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and related products. Under the new law, importers of vaping products face fines of up to MVR 50,000, while those selling these devices can be fined MVR 20,000 per item, with additional penalties for free distribution. Moreover, anyone found selling or giving away vaping devices to minors can incur fines as high as MVR 50,000.

During routine enforcement operations, police identified several violations and issued fines via SMS, which included a payment link for the penalty. A police spokesperson emphasized that strict adherence to the amended law is essential to protect public health and curb the rising trend of vaping.

“Citizens are urged to comply fully with the Tobacco Control Act,” the spokesperson said. “Our efforts are aimed at reducing the use of these harmful products and ensuring a healthier environment for all.”

The crackdown on vaping is part of a broader government initiative to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce exposure to harmful substances. Health experts have warned that a significant portion of cancer and other health issues in the Maldives can be linked to such preventable habits.

While some community members have expressed concerns about the impact of these restrictions, law enforcement officials maintain that the measures are necessary for public welfare. The authorities are continuing to monitor compliance closely and are prepared to take further action against any additional violations.

As the campaign to enforce the Tobacco Control Act gains momentum, the government reiterates its commitment to protecting citizens’ health and upholding the laws designed to safeguard the public from the adverse effects of vaping.
