The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is set to launch a state-run taxi service in the greater Malé area, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday. The collaboration marks a significant step towards modernizing the public transport system, with the service to be provided using electric vehicles (EVs).
The MoU was signed at a special ceremony held at Meerumaa Lounge, where Director General of the Transport Ministry, Ahmed Shameem, represented the government, and MTCC’s Managing Director, Ahmed Saudy, signed on behalf of the company. This partnership is expected to bring a more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly transportation solution to the Malé area.
Under the terms of the agreement, MTCC will operate the taxi service using electric vehicles, a move that aligns with global trends towards sustainability. The service will function similarly to ride-sharing platforms like Uber and Grab, offering a reliable and convenient mode of transportation for both residents and tourists.
The introduction of the 24-hour government taxi service will be carried out in three phases. The first phase, set to launch later this year, will cover Malé, Hulhumalé, and Velana International Airport. In the second phase, which is planned for 2026 and 2027, the service will extend to Villingili and Thilafushi. The final phase, projected for 2028 and 2029, will see the service expand to more remote areas such as Rasmalé, Giraavaru, Addu, Fuvahmulah, and Kulhudhuffushi.
The MTCC has emphasized that the service will meet high standards of quality and reliability, addressing the increasing demand for transportation in the region. The company also stated that the service will be accessible through a special mobile application, which will allow users to easily locate the nearest available taxi.
The government has assured that the new taxi service will follow the rate guidelines established by the Ministry of Transport, ensuring transparency and affordability for the public. Additionally, passengers will be able to book rides up to seven days in advance without incurring any extra charges.
This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to improve public transportation in the Maldives, particularly in the busy Malé area, and its commitment to sustainable development through the adoption of electric vehicles.
