In a special address marking Maldives National Identity Revival Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the importance of integrating Islamic principles with traditional Maldivian values to reinvigorate the nation’s cultural identity. The President’s remarks, delivered during the holy month of Ramadan, underscored the significance of aligning intellectual and spiritual frameworks to guide the country’s future.
“To revive Maldivian national identity, we must redefine its meaning in today’s society, guided by intellectual principles,” President Muizzu stated. His words resonated with the day’s purpose—an annual observance established to reinforce and celebrate the country’s cultural heritage.
The President highlighted that the revitalization of national identity requires a thoughtful blend of the nation’s historical values and the guidance of Islam. He emphasized the role of Islamic teachings as a vital force in shaping and preserving Maldivian identity. For Muizzu, Islam acts as a lens through which cultural practices are filtered, allowing positive influences to thrive while curbing detrimental ones.
In his address, President Muizzu also acknowledged the historical significance of Islam’s acceptance in the Maldives, describing it as the most transformative event for the country’s identity. “Islam has provided the moral compass for Maldivians,” he said, outlining the pivotal role of the faith in promoting societal values such as human dignity, honesty, respect for leadership, and a deep sense of community and brotherhood.
He also took the opportunity to reflect on the country’s long history, pointing out that the unbroken habitation of the Maldives over centuries affirms the enduring sovereignty and indigenous character of the nation. “There has never been a time when these islands were uninhabited, and every group that crossed Maldivian seas found a people already settled here,” President Muizzu said.
The connection between national identity and Islam was further exemplified through President Muizzu’s recognition of the country’s historic defense of its values, citing instances where the Maldives successfully protected itself through jihad in defense of the Islamic faith.
As part of his vision for the future, President Muizzu called for a collective commitment to Islamic principles and Maldivian traditions, underscoring that the nation’s prosperity and well-being depend on these foundations. He expressed hope that through this united effort, the Maldives will thrive spiritually, mentally, and socially in the years to come.
Concluding his address, President Muizzu reaffirmed that the ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the nation’s cultural heritage will ensure a strong, prosperous future for the people of the Maldives.
