Contracts Awarded for Healthcare Infrastructure Projects in Nine Atolls

The government has initiated a major healthcare infrastructure expansion across the country, awarding contracts for the development of hospitals, healthcare centers, and a new Dhamanaveshi building in nine atolls. These projects aim to enhance medical services and address longstanding challenges related to space and infrastructure in healthcare facilities.

As part of this initiative, hospitals will be developed on four islands, while four other islands will receive new healthcare centers. Additionally, the government has approved the construction of the Dhamanaveshi building in Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, which will serve as a key facility providing essential health services, including vaccinations and growth monitoring.

The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has been entrusted with several key projects, including:

  • Dhamanaveshi building in Kulhudhuffushi – USD 1.49 million
  • Hanimaadhoo Hospital (Haa Dhaalu Atoll) – USD 6.80 million
  • Maamigili Hospital (Alifu Dhaalu Atoll) – USD 6.81 million
  • Gaafaru Healthcare Centre (Kaafu Atoll) – USD 1.73 million

The contract agreements for these projects were signed between State Minister of Health Ismail Shareef and RDC Chief Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Ali Zuhair.

Meanwhile, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded contracts for additional hospital and healthcare developments, including:

  • Felidhoo Hospital (Vaavu Atoll) – USD 6.83 million
  • Vilufushi Hospital (Thaa Atoll) – USD 6.82 million
  • Maaungoodhoo Healthcare Centre (Shaviyani Atoll) – USD 1.76 million
  • Fodhdhoo Healthcare Centre (Noonu Atoll) – USD 1.74 million

The agreements with MTCC were signed by State Minister of Health Ismail Abdulla and MTCC Chief Dep. Comm. of Police (Ret.) Ahmed Saudee.

Additionally, FENAKA Corporation, a leading utilities provider, will develop the Makunudhoo Healthcare Centre (Haa Dhaalu Atoll) at a cost of USD 6.72 million. The agreement was formalized between State Minister of Health Ahmed Gasim and FENAKA Chief Mohamed Najah.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim emphasized that these projects will bring significant improvements to healthcare services in their respective regions. He reaffirmed that the initiative is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector, ensuring that essential medical services reach all citizens.

Minister Ibrahim noted that the primary challenge in improving healthcare services has been the lack of adequate infrastructure and space on many islands. These projects aim to address those concerns, providing modern and well-equipped facilities for both healthcare workers and patients.

“Without space and resources, we cannot improve services. Most islands need new buildings,” Minister Ibrahim stated. He assured that the health ministry would work closely with contractors to ensure timely completion and the operational readiness of the new facilities.

The government’s nationwide push to upgrade healthcare facilities is expected to significantly enhance access to quality medical care, benefiting communities across the Maldives.
