The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has awarded contracts to three companies for the establishment and upgrading of waste and utilities management centres in 75 islands under the government’s ‘Magey Saafu Raajje’ (My Clean Maldives) program.
The initiative aims to enhance waste management infrastructure across the Maldives, ensuring cleaner islands and improving local tourism. The contracts were officially signed at a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge, where Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim emphasized the importance of efficient waste management in sustaining both environmental conservation and tourism growth.
The contracts for these projects have been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Fenaka Corporation, and Road Development Corporation (RDC):
- MTCC will upgrade 26 islands with improved waste management systems.
- Fenaka is tasked with upgrading 22 islands and newly establishing waste management services in three additional islands.
- RDC will upgrade 20 islands and introduce new services in four islands.
This initiative builds on the government’s broader efforts to strengthen waste management across the country. Last week, the ministry also handed over waste and utility management projects in 34 islands to WAMCO.
The Ministry of Tourism and Environment stated that, in addition to the 109 islands currently under development for waste management infrastructure, the remaining islands have also reached a ministry-accepted standard for waste management.
The ministry expects the waste management projects in all assigned islands to be completed by the end of the year. The ‘Magey Saafu Raajje’ program is part of the government’s larger environmental sustainability efforts, aiming to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Maldives.
