Maldives Expands Dive Tourism with Aircraft Wreck Site in Kudagiri

The Maldives has introduced its first-ever aircraft wreck dive site, marking a new milestone in the country’s dive tourism industry. The ‘Kudagiri Dhoonier Wreck’, located in Kudagiri’s lagoon, was officially established following the submersion of two decommissioned Dornier 228 aircraft from the Air Maldives era.

This initiative aims to enhance Maldives’ dive tourism appeal, offering divers a unique underwater experience while promoting marine biodiversity. The submerged aircraft are expected to attract marine life over time, creating an artificial reef that will serve as both a dive attraction and a conservation project.

Kudagiri’s lagoon, a site designated for tourism and recreational activities, was chosen for the historic aircraft wreck site due to its ideal diving conditions and accessibility from Malé. The new wreck site is anticipated to become a top attraction for local and international divers, contributing to the Maldives’ position as a premier global diving destination.

The Maldives has long been renowned for its pristine coral reefs and diverse marine ecosystems, and the introduction of aircraft wreck diving adds a new dimension to the country’s underwater tourism offerings.

Authorities believe that the Kudagiri Dhoonier Wreck will not only boost tourism revenue but also provide an opportunity for marine research and eco-tourism development, reinforcing the Maldives’ commitment to sustainable tourism initiatives.
