Thulhaadhoo’s 30-Bed Hospital Nears Completion, Enhancing Healthcare in Baa Atoll

The construction of a 30-bed hospital in Thulhaadhoo is making significant progress, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) reporting that major structural milestones have been achieved. The project is expected to greatly enhance healthcare services for the island’s growing population and nearby communities.

The hospital, a two-storey facility, is being developed to alleviate pressure on the Baa Atoll Hospital in Eydhafushi, particularly as the population of Baa Atoll continues to grow. Construction began in July 2023, and since then, critical structural components—including the foundation, pillars, and first-floor slabs—have been completed.

The latest milestone achieved is the terrace slab, while masonry work on the ground floor and column casting at the roof level are currently in progress. With steady advancements, MTCC is focused on ensuring the project is completed as swiftly as possible.

Thulhaadhoo, the second most populous island in Baa Atoll, is home to over 3,000 residents. Currently, the Thulhaadhoo Health Centre, which operates under the Atoll Hospital in Eydhafushi, serves over 40 outpatients daily. The new hospital is expected to significantly improve medical services, providing better access to healthcare for both Thulhaadhoo residents and nearby islands, including Hithadhoo, Goidhoo, Fulhadhoo, and Fehendhoo.

With a total investment of MVR 114.50 million, the development of this state-of-the-art hospital represents a major step in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the Maldives.

Once completed, the 30-bed facility will provide enhanced medical services, reducing the need for residents to travel to other islands for treatment. The hospital will also support emergency care, specialized consultations, and inpatient treatments, contributing to the government’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare accessibility in outer islands.
