Maldivian, the national carrier of the Maldives, has announced the launch of direct flights between Hanimaadhoo and Bengaluru, India, starting May 15. The new route will provide a direct international link for northern Maldives, eliminating the need for travelers to transit through Malé to reach India.
Maldivian stated that this new service will enhance travel convenience for Indian tourists visiting the northern atolls while also benefiting residents of the region by providing a more efficient travel route.
Tickets for the Hanimaadhoo-Bengaluru route will be available for booking from March 16, with twice-weekly flights operating on Sundays and Thursdays.
Speaking on the new route, Maldivian’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Iyas, highlighted the airline’s existing Hanimaadhoo-Thiruvananthapuram flights, which also operate twice weekly. He noted that the addition of Bengaluru aligns with Maldivian’s strategy to expand its international footprint and strengthen connectivity between Maldives and key global destinations.
This initiative is also in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to enhancing the national airline’s services and expanding its network. Earlier this year, on January 6, the government fulfilled an electoral pledge by acquiring a wide-body aircraft for Maldivian, boosting its ability to operate long-haul flights.
With the new aircraft, Maldivian has already begun direct flights to China, connecting Maldives to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. The airline is now working towards acquiring an additional wide-body aircraft to facilitate further international expansion, including planned services to major European cities.
The launch of the Hanimaadhoo-Bengaluru route represents another step in strengthening Maldives’ air connectivity, reinforcing Maldivian’s position as a growing international carrier while enhancing trade, tourism, and mobility between the two nations.
