Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim emphasized the government’s commitment to establishing waste management systems on every inhabited island. He stated that additional waste management centres will be constructed in more islands in the coming weeks as part of efforts to improve environmental sustainability.

The Minister also revealed that necessary waste management equipment has already been procured and will soon be delivered to the islands. He reaffirmed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s goal to establish waste management centres in all inhabited islands by the end of the year, urging island councils to fully cooperate in the implementation of these projects.

The Greater Malé Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, with financial support through grants and loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other international donors. The initiative aims to establish a sustainable and eco-friendly waste management system across Zone 3, which includes islands in Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, and Vaavu Atoll.

With the contract awarded, the construction of the waste management centres is expected to begin soon, marking a significant step in the government’s broader vision for a cleaner and more sustainable Maldives.
