The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has announced plans to commence an extensive upgrade of Faafu Nilandhoo’s sewerage system in May 2025, aiming to resolve persistent issues faced by the island’s residents.
MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed confirmed the project in response to concerns raised by a Nilandhoo resident on X, who highlighted the difficulties caused by the island’s current sewerage system.
Nilandhoo presently operates a vacuum sewerage system, which relies on small pipes to transport waste to a central plant. However, Matheen acknowledged that the system has posed significant challenges for residents. To address these concerns, MWSC will replace it with a gravity-based sewerage system, which utilizes larger underground pipes to transport sewage directly to a discharge point, ensuring a more sustainable and efficient solution.
Matheen stated that preparatory work is already in progress, with both land and topographic surveys completed. The company is now finalizing the design, pending approvals from the Utility Regulatory Authority and the completion of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
Construction is scheduled to begin once these approvals are secured, with the project expected to be fully completed by the end of 2026.
