Speaker of the Maldives Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has arrived in Tashkent to represent the country at the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which officially began on Friday.
The Speaker is joined by a parliamentary delegation that includes Minority Leader Ibrahim Nazil, along with MPs Asma Rasheed, Dr. Anara Naeem, Abdulla Rifau, and Hussain Imran Latheef. The high-level gathering runs from April 5 to 9 and brings together lawmakers from around the world to engage in dialogue on pressing global issues.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union, established in 1889, is the world’s oldest and largest organization of national parliaments. It serves as a global platform for parliamentary diplomacy, fostering cooperation among legislators and promoting democratic governance.
The Maldives formally became a member of the IPU following a parliamentary resolution passed on November 4, 2004. Subsequently, on June 6, 2006, guidelines were approved to establish the Maldivian branches of the union, further solidifying the country’s participation in global parliamentary affairs.
The 150th Assembly offers an opportunity for the Maldives to engage with international counterparts, exchange legislative experiences, and reinforce its commitment to democratic processes and multilateral cooperation.
