A Colombian national has been taken into police custody after authorities discovered ammunition in his possession during security screening at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Wednesday night.

The foreigner, who was traveling on a tourist visa, was intercepted during routine checks as he prepared to board Emirates flight EK653 bound for Dubai. The flight was scheduled to depart at 11:00 p.m. local time.

According to Maldives Police Service, the bullets were found during standard security procedures. While the specific type and quantity of ammunition have not been disclosed, the individual was immediately detained and later presented to the Criminal Court. The court has since ordered a six-day remand pending further investigation.

Law enforcement authorities have yet to release the suspect’s identity and are continuing inquiries into how the ammunition came into his possession and whether there is any broader implication to the case.

The Maldives has stringent regulations prohibiting the import, possession, or transport of firearms and ammunition without explicit government authorization. Violations of these laws can lead to severe penalties under the country’s criminal code.

Airport security protocols have been reinforced in recent years, and authorities have urged travelers to be fully aware of local laws when entering or exiting the Maldives.
