The Maldives Golf Association (MGA) has officially presented President Dr Mohamed Muizzu with the symbolic jersey and a commemorative plaque of the upcoming Maldives Open 2025, marking a key moment in the country’s efforts to promote golf on an international stage.
The handover ceremony took place ahead of the much-anticipated tournament, which is set to be held on April 25, 2025, at the prestigious Victoria Golf and Country Resort in Sri Lanka. The symbolic items were presented to the President by MGA Vice President Ahmed Nazeer during a special meeting at the President’s Office.
The Maldives Open 2025 will be the country’s first international golf tournament and is being organized under the theme “Unity and Friendship through Golf.” The event is expected to bring together both amateur and professional golfers from around the world, creating new opportunities for sporting diplomacy and talent recognition.
Founded recently on July 24, 2024, by prominent Maldivian figures Hussain Afeef and Ahmed Nazeer, the MGA aims to spearhead the development of golf in the Maldives. The association’s mission includes organizing tournaments, offering training programs for players of all levels, and working in close partnership with international golf organizations.
One of MGA’s key long-term goals is the establishment of the Maldives’ first-ever 18-hole golf course, as part of its vision to create a sustainable and inclusive golfing community in the country. The association also views golf as a means to boost tourism and contribute to broader economic development.
Speaking on the significance of the upcoming tournament, MGA officials noted that the Maldives Open 2025 will not only serve as a high-level sporting event, but also act as a platform to nurture local talent, promote the spirit of sportsmanship, and foster global connections through the sport.
With this symbolic presentation to President Muizzu, preparations for the Maldives Open 2025 are now officially underway, signalling a new chapter in the nation’s sporting history.
