President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged his administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life for thalassaemia patients across the Maldives, following a consultative meeting held Monday at the President’s Office with members of the thalassaemia community.
During the discussion, community representatives expressed appreciation for the government’s openness in addressing their concerns, noting that this marked one of the few instances where patients and families had been given direct access to voice their needs to the President. The dialogue served as a platform for exchanging ideas and pressing for meaningful collaboration on future healthcare planning.
One of the primary requests raised by the community was to ensure that patients and their families are actively involved in the development of the upcoming Thalassaemia Hospital. They stressed the need for inclusive decision-making, stating that policies should be shaped not only for the thalassaemia community but also with their input and vision.
Additionally, the group called for the expansion of the Maldives Blood Service (MBS) into a fully integrated, nationwide network capable of efficiently meeting the needs of all patients. They highlighted the necessity for a more coordinated approach between the MBS and the thalassaemia community, and shared detailed proposals on how to achieve this transformation.
Representatives also noted that, for the first time, a Maldivian government has made specific provisions for children with thalassaemia in its manifesto—an unprecedented step they say signals genuine political will. They expressed readiness to work closely with the administration in developing inclusive, patient-focused healthcare policies.
In his response, President Muizzu reassured participants that their concerns would not go unheard. He recognised the importance of incorporating patient perspectives in policymaking and reaffirmed his commitment to creating treatment pathways that allow patients to receive comprehensive care within the Maldives, without needing to travel abroad.
“The voices shared today are not only valid—they are vital,” the President said. “This administration will take actionable steps to ensure thalassaemia patients receive the support and care they need, right here at home.”
President Muizzu further reiterated his administration’s resolve to work hand-in-hand with affected communities to deliver long-term, sustainable solutions that reflect the needs and dignity of every Maldivian living with thalassaemia.
