Maldives Met Office Issues Weather Alert as Southwest Monsoon Strengthens

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a public weather advisory warning of increasingly active southwest monsoon conditions expected to affect the country over the coming days.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Met Office forecasted a significant uptick in monsoon activity, likely to bring bouts of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas across the Maldives over the next three days.

The advisory cautions that these intensified weather conditions could disrupt both marine and air travel, with the potential to impact daily life for residents and tourists across the islands. Authorities are particularly concerned about the risks posed to small vessels and low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding.

The Met Office has called on the public to remain vigilant, follow regular weather updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period.

Southwest monsoon activity typically peaks between May and September, and while it is a seasonal norm, surges in intensity such as this can cause localized hazards. The warning serves as a timely reminder for communities to prepare accordingly.
