Government Launches New Outreach Program to Support Bedridden Elderly

In a renewed effort to strengthen social welfare and care for senior citizens, the Maldivian government has launched a community-based programme aimed at improving the quality of life for bedridden elderly individuals across the country.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, was officially inaugurated by Minister Dr Aishath Shiham, who emphasized the programme’s role in ensuring that vulnerable senior citizens are not left behind in the nation’s development agenda.

As part of the programme, government teams will conduct monthly home visits to bedridden elderly individuals. These visits are intended not only to offer emotional support and companionship but also to help identify the social and medical support required by both the individuals and their caregivers.

Minister Shiham noted that the initiative was launched under the direct instruction of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, highlighting it as one of several ongoing social protection measures. “This programme aims to bridge the gap between the government and some of the most vulnerable members of our society. By identifying their needs and responding appropriately, we hope to make a real difference in their lives,” she said.

A key feature of the initiative is the involvement of young people, which the Minister said will foster intergenerational understanding and strengthen the societal fabric. “Our goal is to make sure that the elderly remain connected to their communities and feel valued and supported,” she added.

The programme is closely linked to the government’s broader community engagement efforts, including the “Haalu Kihineh?” initiative, which has already seen over 12,000 households visited to assess social conditions and collect data on the challenges facing families across the Maldives.

With this new outreach focused on the bedridden elderly, the government hopes to enhance the delivery of essential social services, ensure dignity in care, and reaffirm its commitment to inclusive development.
