President Muizzu Predicts Fast-Track Success for Creative Sector Ambitions

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has voiced optimism that the Maldives may reach its ambitious goal of having the creative industry contribute 15 percent to the national GDP well before the 2030 target.

The President shared his remarks during a visit to Maldives Expo 2025, a dynamic showcase of local talent and innovation which opened on May 23 in Hulhumalé. Following his official inauguration of the event, President Muizzu returned the next day for a more in-depth tour, engaging directly with exhibitors, entrepreneurs, and creative professionals.

Speaking to PSM News, the President praised the vibrancy of the expo, highlighting its role in elevating public appreciation for the creative sector. “The level of participation and the variety of work on display reflect a thriving, inspired community of creatives,” he said. “With this momentum, I believe we may surpass our targets ahead of schedule.”

In line with his administration’s broader economic agenda, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of nurturing the creative economy. He reaffirmed that his government remains steadfast in its pledge to integrate the sector more deeply into the national economic framework.

Among the initiatives outlined are the introduction of a national digital platform for creatives to expand their commercial reach—both locally and internationally. The President also pointed to upcoming support structures such as a comprehensive payment gateway and dedicated seller accounts, aimed at empowering Maldivian artists, designers, and content creators to better monetise their work.

“These steps are about building a sustainable ecosystem for creativity to thrive,” President Muizzu noted, linking the sector’s growth directly to national development.

In a forward-looking announcement, the President revealed that plans are underway to declare the upcoming year as the national year of productivity, a theme that aligns with his administration’s focus on economic opportunity, digital transformation, and entrepreneurial support.

“The creative industry is not just about art or design—it’s about innovation, identity, and long-term prosperity,” he said.

The Maldives Expo 2025 has drawn widespread public and private participation, with exhibits spanning technology, fashion, visual arts, digital media, and traditional crafts. Observers have hailed the event as a significant step forward in promoting the country’s cultural and creative assets as drivers of future economic growth.

As the government continues to refine its roadmap for development, President Muizzu’s renewed focus on the creative sector signals a strong commitment to economic diversification—and a belief in the untapped potential of Maldivian talent.
