President Muizzu Declares August 30 as National Engineers’ Day

In a move to recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of engineers to national development, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially declared August 30 as National Engineers’ Day. The decision was announced through a directive issued by the President’s Office on Sunday.

The newly established national observance will be held annually, with the aim of honoring the work and achievements of engineers across the Maldives. The chosen date commemorates the inauguration of the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge—renowned as the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in the country. The bridge, which connects Malé to Hulhulé and Hulhumalé, was officially opened on August 30, 2018.

According to the directive, the significance of the bridge not only lies in its scale but also in its symbol of engineering excellence and international collaboration. It marks a milestone in the Maldives’ infrastructure history and stands as a testament to the critical role engineers play in shaping the nation’s progress.

The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has been designated as the lead agency responsible for coordinating all activities related to the annual celebration. The Ministry will plan and oversee nationwide events and programs designed to promote engineering innovation, inspire future engineers, and reflect on the contributions of the profession to national development.

With the formal establishment of National Engineers’ Day, the government hopes to foster greater appreciation for the engineering field and encourage more young Maldivians to pursue careers in science, technology, and infrastructure development.
