The soon-to-be-launched international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is expected to usher in a new era of tourism growth in the Maldives, according to Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree.
In a recent social media statement, Shiuree expressed optimism that the modern infrastructure of the terminal will not only enhance the travel experience but also significantly increase annual tourist arrivals to the island nation.
Construction of the new terminal began in 2017, with the goal of relieving pressure from the existing terminal, which currently handles over 1.5 million passengers a year despite a surge in visitor numbers that has exceeded two million annually. The new facility is designed to accommodate up to 7 million passengers per year—nearly five times the existing capacity—signaling a major step forward in airport infrastructure and national capacity building.
Shiuree emphasized the broader economic impact of the project, saying, “This terminal is poised to be world-class. With international-level amenities and services, it will create new opportunities across the tourism sector and contribute significantly to economic growth.”
The terminal, which spans over 78,000 square meters and will include aero bridges, self-check-in systems, and automated baggage handling, is expected to redefine the arrival experience for visitors. It is set to open on July 26, coinciding with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day.
Government officials and tourism leaders have welcomed the accelerated timeline. When President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office, only 54 percent of the terminal’s construction had been completed. Under his administration’s direction, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has expedited work, bringing the opening date two months ahead of its previous October 2025 schedule.
President Muizzu has repeatedly underlined the importance of infrastructure that supports tourism, calling the new terminal a pivotal component in expanding the Maldives’ appeal to global travelers. In line with his administration’s vision, the President has also pledged to introduce halal tourism, further diversifying the country’s offerings and tapping into emerging markets.
The aviation upgrade is expected to unlock potential for niche tourism segments, improve travel convenience, and cement the Maldives’ status as a world-class destination well into the future.
