President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed have returned to the Maldives after concluding a successful state visit to Singapore, held at the invitation of Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
The high-level visit marked a significant chapter in the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the Maldives and Singapore, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to deeper cooperation in areas spanning development, education, and economic growth.
During the visit, President Muizzu met with President Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to explore opportunities for enhanced collaboration. Several key agreements were signed, including Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on capacity building, environmental development, and educational exchange. Notably, an MoU with the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise was formalised to boost institutional collaboration.
Among the major agreements signed was a strategic deal with Henley & Partners to establish a Residence by Investment Programme in the Maldives, aimed at attracting high-net-worth individuals. Another significant signing was with APM SPV Private Limited for the implementation of Project Solar City—an ambitious initiative aimed at advancing the Maldives’ renewable energy goals.
To commemorate the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations, President Muizzu presented a special edition book to President Shanmugaratnam, chronicling five decades of Maldives–Singapore cooperation. The two leaders also jointly unveiled a set of commemorative stamps, symbolising shared milestones and continued friendship.
At the Maldives–Singapore Business Forum, President Muizzu honoured individuals and businesses that have contributed to strengthening commercial ties. The forum showcased the Maldives’ investment landscape and highlighted priority projects under the government’s Vision 2040 framework.
The visit also included a series of institutional tours, where the President and First Lady visited the Institute of Technical Education, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Tuas Port, the Peranakan Museum, and the Singapore Food Agency. These engagements underscored the Maldives’ interest in adopting best practices in urban planning, vocational training, and food safety.
Additionally, the President and First Lady met with members of the Maldivian diaspora in Singapore, further reinforcing the government’s outreach to overseas communities.
According to the President’s Office, the state visit reflects a renewed diplomatic momentum, with both countries set to deepen cooperation across strategic sectors and support mutual development objectives.
