MWSC Terminates Deputy MD as Corruption Inquiry Drags On

The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has officially terminated its suspended Deputy Managing Director, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, following months of suspension linked to an active corruption investigation.

Fazeel was initially suspended from his position on December 19, 2024, after authorities launched a probe into irregularities related to the previous administration’s ‘Binveriyaa’ housing scheme. The investigation, led by the Maldives Police Service (MPS), is centered on the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), where Fazeel previously served in a senior capacity.

In a statement issued by MWSC, the company confirmed that its Board of Directors had made the decision to permanently remove Fazeel from his role. The board cited the prolonged nature of the investigation and the impracticality of keeping him on indefinite paid suspension as key reasons for his dismissal.

“The board has determined that it is not in the company’s best interest to retain Mr. Fazeel in a senior position under suspension for such an extended duration,” the company said.

Fazeel had earlier been subjected to asset-related investigative measures, including the confiscation of his passport and mobile phone. His dismissal follows wider administrative action stemming from the same investigation — including the suspension of the entire HDC board last year. While HDC’s former Managing Director, Fazul Rasheed, has since resigned, the remaining board members have been reinstated.

The corruption probe into the land allocation process under the Binveriyaa scheme continues, with authorities yet to announce the conclusion of the inquiry.
